An e-mountain bike usually goes far beyond everyday use. If you only need an e-bike for commuting around town or to work, there are better options. Because many E-MTBs rely on very high standards for the components. Of course, quality is always desired – but unfortunately it also has its price.

With a full-suspension bike, there are also small disadvantages in everyday life. The bike vibrates when the pedals are loaded and thus loses efficiency slightly, even if the electric motor naturally compensates for this. The parts of the mountain bike also want to be better maintained : Checking the suspension fork and the damper is quick, but annoying if you don’t need the suspension anyway.
Incidentally, the classic E-MTB is also not approved for road traffic. Before you buy, you should ask the manufacturer whether, for example, a lighting system can be retrofitted in order to be safe on the road. For every bike, however, there is battery lighting that you can easily install yourself.
What should I look out for when buying an e-mountain bike?
It is difficult, if not impossible, to make a blanket recommendation for e-MTBs, since the way they are used varies just as much as the equipment on the bikes. Despite everything, there are some characteristics that you should inform yourself about. When it comes to mountain bikes in particular, however, the following applies: The bike is more than the sum of its parts. A good data sheet can tell you a lot, but ultimately you have to feel comfortable on the E-MTB. The best parts are useless if the frame geometry doesn’t fit.
Wheel 27.5 or 29 inches?
Last but not least, the size and shape of the frame and the fork are determined by the wheel size. In recent years, two wheel sizes in particular have been able to establish themselves on the E-MTB market : 27.5 inches and 29 inches. The smaller wheels provide more stability because they are stiffer. The larger wheels, on the other hand, roll over obstacles better and are slightly faster. In addition, they fit well on frames for tall people.
In order to be able to better use the advantages of the different barrel sizes, some models offer different sizes for the front and rear wheel. The 29-inch front wheels offer increased control on the handlebars, while the 27.5-inch rear tires provide the necessary downhill traction. The seating position is also a bit more upright due to the different sizes, so that you don’t get the feeling of tipping over on steep slopes.
Battery on the E-MTB
